i love the pit. it's like an endurance race in a teenytiny tweeter space. get set at 5pm; leave @ 11pm with the last sparking shafts of HLAH, while strictly regulating your food/fluid intake so you need neither faint nor pee in those 6 hours.

i was so dehydrated after the show i pissed brown. and when i swam this morning my calves convulsed w/wracking spasms if i came off a flipturn with any force. but it was well worth it. nails shows are so cathartic: i leave them a much kinder & gentler person.

have another cup ... of Ass Coffee

good news:

Coffee Protects Alcohol Drinkers From Liver Disease

Drinking coffee protects alcohol drinkers from developing liver disease, says a new study carried out at the Kaiser Permanente Medical Care Program, California, USA. According to the researchers, one cup of coffee per day lowered the incidence of cirrhosis of the liver for alcohol drinkers by 22%.
i'm covered 88% so far this morning.

meters & yards

not enough sleep.
not enough caffeine.

not enough time.

arrived on deck this morning to find redesigned pool: lane lanes now running perpendicular so we're swimming meters, not yards. my body's too accustomed to 15 strokes per lap; asking it to throw in 2-3 additional strokes totally throws me off my freestyle and i cannot do fly to save my life. we also lost our backstroke flags, so i yaw between the lane lines and then crumple into the wall.

whomever said "change is good" never had to confront it at 5am with insufficient sleep, caffeine & coordination.

brasilbrasil vs. croatia today. and nails in DC.
you're going to get what you deserve.

of face-painting, 5Ks and dalmations

saturday morning, we wrapped up the spring Girls on the Run season with a 5K. gorgeous weather prompted a ton of day-of registrations, so we ended up with ~300 participants, despite the fact that the efforts of the marketing director (yrs truly) were truly paltry the last 2 weeks.

H, a girl i coached last fall, instantly cleaved to me when she discovered me at the Running Buddies table, reminding me (not unpleasantly) how much time and energy some of these girls require. but the very fact that she returned for a second season is a hopeful sign: maybe she'll be okay and NOT end up in the nuthouse like her mom.

the last girl rolled in at a little over an hour, and i was talking with fisch and the steeplechaser's wife about triathlon when L appeared at my side, all breathless and ebullient.

-- finn omigod, can you do me the biggest favor in the world pretty please.
i looked around, but H wasn't in sight.
-- does it have something to do with H? -- i said guardedly.
-- no, nothing like that. there're like 20 girls lined up for the face-painter. can you help her out? all you need to do is paint stars and hearts. PLEASE??
-- stars and hearts; that's all?
-- yes.
-- okay. i can do stars and hearts.

L towed me to the face-painting table.

-- girls, here's another artist. now you can make 2 lines.
L bustled girls into a second queue, then left.

-- hi -- i barked at the first girl, trying to come off as confident and avuncular -- what would you like painted on your cheek?
-- i want a dalmation.

fucking L owes me Big Time. for the next hour and a half, i painted puppydogs, rainbows, butterflies and cherries on cheeks, hands and forearms. i even did a couple WWJD's and fishes without uttering any snide remarks. H wanted black & red snakes with flames, and because i've a soft spot for her, she got all that without have to wait in line for each like the Face-painter Nazi advocated.

Face-painter Nazi did not get the fact that i saved her ass by showing up when i did, cos she never would have gotten through all those kids on her own. sure, i was a little unpolished when i first started and sure i almost painted her sleeve a couple times stabbing for the paint and sure my roses didn't look as nice as hers did. my most egregious sin? contamination. midway though another american flag, i heard her big combustible sigh. i shrank. cold disdain blew off her in waves.

-- could you PLEASE not get COLORS in the WHITE PAINT.
yeech.
-- listen bitch, i've got one ratty paintbrush, a soggy paper towel and a cup of dirty water. what the fuck do you want from me?!?

but i did not say that out loud because of the small children. i merely gnashed my teeth and tried to appear apologetic while she emitted another snorty sigh and daubed out the white tub.

dalmation requests aside, the kids were great because for the most part they were just thrilled with whatever they got, be it unsymmetrical butterfly, emaciated horse or weak dalmation/bathroom tile cross-breed. and they did great on the run: so many big smiles. it was refreshing to spectate, for once, and view a race through different eyes.

the next morning, though, i was back at it. ran 20min, then rode 40, then hopped into the 5K that kicks off the eye-talian festival. in a repeat of 2 weeks ago, VC was untouchable, running a 17:26, 1st F and 2nd overall. i was 2nd F, 9th overall, with a 18:54. after the 1st two miles, i started to feel big-time lactic burn... but in my arms, not my legs. i swim 10,000yds a week and i get sore from *face-painting.* how totally totally gay.

not playing in the World Cup?? might as well drink.

have fantasies of dominating the pitch like ronaldinho, only to be haunted & taunted by your athletic inadequacies? then join your compeers in a binge drinking session. a recent british study of men's health & masculinity concludes that rowdy, drunken behavior of football fans is an attempt to assuage their feelings of inadequacy.

the study insinuates that young men who don't play soccer or other contact sports may seek that "tough guy" feeling by downing a six-pack or two during the game, while good sportsmen said that they were able to resist pressure to drink or drink excessively.

i guess that makes me an inadequate, bad sport.

OTOH, i had another butterfly moment today. "forget the kick," my coach said, "and just let your legs drag behind. the kick will come naturally, when you lead with your chest." eureka! my timing clicked and i got on top of the pull instead of flailing to catch up with it. when it's on, fly is very very good, when it's off, it's awful. it also occasions comments from this, from passionate designer-boy wallace: "that's it! i'm gonna start lifting. i'm sick of you walking around here with guns bigger than mine are."

FWIW, my ass is bigger too.

speaking of guns, nails in town next week for 4 shows: DC, camden, holmdel & jones beach. there is so much life to live.

frame by frame

every so often i get moony about bike racing. multi-sport is fun, but i miss the strategery of cycling, the flyers and breakaways, the set-up and sphincter-clenching lead-up to the sprint.

then i see shit like this and me and my epidermis feel a whole lot more content. owee.

same shit, different country

a narrow, quaint street in Besalu, not far from Banyoles, which hosted the rowing events for the '92 olympics. was admiring the cathedral when i hear the distinctive sound of two cats going at it. it's my first day in spain and i'm being greeted by the same shit i've got at home: squalling cats.

but this squall's a long one and T, L and i walk around the corner to investigate. the confrontation's taking place in a flat on the 3rd floor, which i guess is the 2nd if you're a spaniard. apparently freaked out by the noise and fighting, a third cat darts out the french doors and leaps atop the wrought iron rail enclosing the flat's balcony. it wobbles there, contemplating the leap across the street to a quieter, safer spot.

-- i don't think they're fighting, T posited. i think they're makin' luuuuuuuuuv.

if that's love, i want no part of it, and neither does the wobbly cat. i'm rooting for it to attempt the jump. maybe it won't make it and maybe there will be one less cat in the world. i edge closer with my camera.

the love inside is painful and LONG. wobbly cat gives up on the jump and settles into a precarious crouch on the 2-inch thick rail. i'm not going to get it in motion, so i settle for a shot of the cat from below. the shutter clicks and i take a step to rejoin T and L when something strikes my forearm. something warm, hard and a bit tacky. i stare at the nugget on the ground and sniff my arm to confirm. there are no little kids chucking stuff from windows, and the inside cats have not overturned the litter box. there's no explanation other than the fact i've just been shit on by the cat on the railing.

apparently my reputation runs far and wide.

UCI report exonerates Armstrong

last week Dutch investigators released a 132-page report which "exonerates Lance Armstrong completely with respect to alleged use of doping in the 1999 Tour de France."

finally.

the report also mentioned "possible legal and ethical violations" committed by the World Anti-Doping Agency, noting WADA "behaved in ways that are completely inconsistent with the rules and regulations of international anti-doping control testing."

word to the french: get over your fucking selves. americans can ride bikes.

in other news, i am jet-lagged and cranky. my body, still on spain time, says it's time for happy hour. grrrr.

some pix in my flickr account. my digicam battery expired in front of gaudi's saggy family.

(FMC, i bought a FCB football jersey in barcelona. don't hate me.)

the biggest news in toys since the vibrator!!

the gravitizer purports to "take the gravity out of sex, for an experience that's like nothing else." it allows for Many Creative Positions, including the Milk Run, Flying Carpet and Give-N-Take.

with the gravitizer, "even a frenzied beating is easy to sustain." meow.

downfalls of a blog

my mom once told me she'd hate to race against me because i'm so competitive. "you're always plotting," she remarked. "i can't win through pure talent," i explained, "so i must resort to craftiness." plus racing can be real snoozers, so you might as well do something to entertain yourself, like figuring out how to fuck over your competition.

last night i did a local 5K because the race organiser's a friend of mine and i'd worked with her to get 32 kids signed up. my appearance was more community service than anything else, and i was looking forward to a stroll in the park. one of the vicki's showed, so i didn't have to fret about the possibility of winning, cos there is no way i'm gonna come close to a 17:30.

also toeing the line, however, was blondie. i know a lot about blondie because i read her blog. i know her weekly mileage and workouts. i know her strengths and weaknesses; i follow her ups and downs. i know she ran a fast 6-mile leg of the DE marathon relay on sunday, so she might be tired. you might say i had an unfair advantage last night.

when we took off i ran 10 yards behind her, watching her on the first descent, then the first hill (she doesn't like hills; i do). i watched her form and listened to her breathing & footfalls. i came abreast of her just as we turned into the wind (dumb on my part), and she tucked her little form behind my big one and let me brave the wind. i come from cycling, so my natural response was to weave and try to shake her, and if i weaved back & forth on the rougher patches of the road, so be it (she's not secretive about her klutziness; i am a trail runner).

approaching the tight cul-de-sac that's the turn-around, she pulled alongside, but i hugged the corner so she had to take the outside, long way 'round (she's not comfortable taking corners right beside someone -- see klutziness). when she tried to make a move to the inside, i notched up the speed just a little so she couldn't pass. i listened to her breath, footfalls.

i was 99% red-lined. my legs are still tired from sunday's tri, and we'd run our first 2 miles at sub-6min pace. when she passed me on the straight, i didn't challenge her. i thought she'd just charge up the road.

but she didn't, and i stuck to her shoulder like a fucking leech for the next half-mile. when her pace eased a bit, i pulled alongside just as we passed a little girl oncoming, headed for the turn-around. this little kid had fire in her eyes, brows knit in concentration. "great job," i said to her, "way to go!" blondie must have HATED me at that point. bitch be a cheering section now. she dropped back a little further, and i think that's where she broke.

i took off toward the final hill, the slap of her shoes on the downhill pursuing me like poe's beating heart. when we hit the ascent, i was totally depleted, and only the rhythm of my stride and a dude a couple steps ahead kept me going. that last mile SUCKED -- we ran it in 6:20. i finished in 18:59 and blondie crossed the line at 19:07 but i didn't see her cos i was looking for a private spot in case i hurled. the vicki beat us by a minute-thirty.

the good angel says i really hope blondie doesn't hate me, but the bad angel says that's racing, and if you were in a bike race, sitting on someone's wheel for 60K and then coming around them in the sprint isn't a shitty thing to do, it's just strategy. so is reading your competitors' blogs.

if you know me, pls keep it to yourself.

meanwhile, 4 races in 3 weeks is my limit. i'm looking forward to being Floater Girl in the pool at el panorama, a drink in each hand. dos mojitas mas, por favor.

THANK GOD FOR CRIPPLE SOLDIERS

this weekend the somnolence of (s)lower delaware was disturbed by protests triggered by a marine's funeral in seaford, where cpl cory parker was laid to rest after his humvee was blown up outside fallujah.

were the protestors calling for peace?
nope, they're followers of some asshole minister from westboro baptist church in kansas. the church believes god's killing soldiers in iraq because He's pissed about gays in the military. "we have given God the finger," one chuch member explained, "now we are suffering God's wrath." protestors' signs announced "fags doom nations" and "god hates fags."

apparently god's pretty PO'd in general, though, because checking out the group's website, thesignsofthetimes.net, links to the following mini-sites:

Smell The Brimstone
God Hates America
God Hates Fags
Priests Rape Boys
God Hates Canada
God Hates Sweden

WTF did sweden do?? canada i can understand, what with bilking american pharma companies out of brazillions of dollars as consumers find better deals on cialis & ambien over the border. but sweden?

oh, okay. it's all about:

The popinjay King of Sweden - a moral titmouse in the plumage of a peacock, who lives lavishly with his lazy, horny kids on Sweden's largest social security check - is King of Fags, King of Zoophiles, King of Pedophiles, and King of Incestuous Perverts.
that makes sense now. and the flamey, brimstoney header is total street cred.

there's another funeral in seaford today, for another iraqi casualty. minister phelps and his craven followers are expected to show.

in my world they'd be torn apart by dogs.

sunday's olympic distance tri

columbia triathlon
1.5K swim – 41K bike – 10K run
ellicott city, MD

every time i do columbia, i fall in love with it a little more. it’s high-profile and well organised, and the courses are so fun. not your av-er-age bear.

the swim takes place in a lake with clear, clean water – a world apart from the sludge we braved at devilman in jersey two weeks ago. the water temp was a refreshing 66 degrees, and everyone wore wetsuits. i started at the front line of my age group’s wave and had a good (for me) swim, coming out of the water 8th out of about 80.

i found my bike quickly and began to fight against my wetsuit, with which i’ve had separation issues ever since i got it 4 years ago. i cannot get out of the thing with any grace or speed and my frantic struggles endanger anything within striking distance.

i gave up standing and plopped down on the ground to scrabble at the rubber bunching up around my timing chip strap. precious seconds bled away and i imagined dusk falling and volunteers picking up bits of trash around me 12 hours later when i still hadn’t made any headway. but I finally worked my foot loose and ran my bike out of transition. my T1 was 2:56, roughly a minute slower than my competition.

the good thing about starting in the 10th of 12 waves is that most of the race is in front of you, so i passed a stream of people on the bike. i had some jiggy saul williams in my head, my zipps were flying on the descents and i consumed a gel without smearing it over my handlebars, so life was good. R overhauled my bike last week and cleared a salt lick out of my bottom bracket so it’s smooooth sailing.

columbia’s bike course is hilly and technical in spots and there was a stiff wind, but i still ended up with a significantly faster average speed than i netted on devilman’s flatter, shorter course. the official results show my bike split time as down-to-the-second matching my time from last year. kinda freaky. i couldn’t do that if i tried.

my second transition wasn’t lightening-fast by any stretch of the imagination, but it at least didn’t involve writhing on the ground like the first one did. i donned my socks, racing flats & race belt with saul still looping in my head. i considered chanting to the first water table now tell me where my niggaz at and then thought better of it.

from the sidelines, my parents informed me that there was only 1 woman in my age group up the road, and she had a minute-thirty on me. i felt that frisson of energy that comes with knowing 1st place is within your grasp.

i worked my ass off on that run, knocking out the 4th fastest female run split, pros included; but i was chasing the woman who ran the 2nd fastest. hope hall is way out of my league, and if i’d known i was chasing her, i wouldn’t have been dispirited at the finish after failing to run down my prey.

i ended up 12th woman out of about 400 and the 7th amateur, an improvement over last year’s 10th. i would love to crack the top 5 and get me one of those Waterford crystal trophies, but first my wetsuit and i must come to an Understanding.

clients. can't live with 'em; can't live without 'em

13-hour day yesterday. emerged with profound Learnings.

beware of potential clients who:

  • give you the wrong street address to their HQ
  • usher you into a room with no projector or screen
  • refuse to let you use the projector you brought
  • don't bother to introduce their 10-person team to your 5-person one
  • glare at you during your pitch
  • cock knowing eyebrows at their compeers across the table
  • have no questions about your 70-page proposal or 90-min presentation
when it came my turn to do my bit, i didn't give a shit cos i knew whatever i said could not possibly make the situation any worse. so i did just fine.

and the two pints i had afterward did me fine as well, as did the over-priced glass of pinot grigio i enjoyed while the project manager, marketing manager and i argued about the meanings of Sideways with a pharma rep occupying an adjacent seat at the airport bar.

meanwhile, J, our CIO, called the office.
-- we've been delayed. we won't be leaving at 3:30 after all.
-- why? what's up? my boss asked.
-- well, we've got some problems.
-- problems? what kind of problems?
-- well, it's finn and M.
-- huh?
-- they're in custody.
-- no.
-- yes.
silence, while my boss processes, and then asks
-- well, do we have bail money?
-- sorry, you're breaking up. will call you back later -- and J hung up.

that's wot you get for sending your troops into hostile territory.

i have been dutifully tapering all week but i'm not entirely confident in my legs' ability to perform on sunday. we shall see.

adjust your cup size on the fly

think you're hot stuff cos you can lock out your mtn bike shocks on the fly? well, can you tweak your breast size during a trip to the loo? with the inflatable breast dress you can.

"One wearer said the dress was very comfortable and also gave her a different sense of personal space. With large inflated breasts, she felt like she had a protective zone."

so that's what they're for!

today's cull

Dr. and Mr. Haggis-On-Whey present The Noses of the World.

feedback from james joyce's submission of Ulysses to his creative writing workshop. some excerpts:

"Snotgreen" = hyphenated.
Unclear where and when this is set.
Think you accidentally stapled in something from your playwriting workshop for Ch. 15.

did you read The Da Vinci Code? if so, according to this survey, you're now twice as likely to believe christ had a kid, and four times as likely to believe opus dei is "a murderous sect," than you were before you read the novel. according to my survey, you're also ten times as likely to believe dan brown couldn't write his way out of a paper bag.

finally, a
sumo wrestler blog. i can't read it but the pix speak for themselves. guys, if you're ever in delaware, give me a call. would love to party witcha.

more than a hundred bucks

heap big tri this weekend, so it's Taper Time. tapering after a recovery week doesn't make much sense, but if twenny years of racing has taught me anything, it's listen what yer body says. if you listen and follow its advice so much the better.

swam a straight 1000yd for time today, knocking a couple seconds off each 200 to finish in 14:49. not blazing, but under 3:00 per 200. even more impressive is the fact that i swam 20 laps and didn't lose count. on a monday morning, too.

after a horrendous week, legs and spirits seem to be rebounding a bit. the "deep well of fatigue" i felt in my legs is dissipating -- and just in time, too. with its rolling bike course and hilly run, columbia's tough enough on perky legs. stopped by DRC friday afternoon and bought a new pair of racing flats. "whenever you have a crappy race, blame the shoes and get new ones," opined MM -- always a credible authority, even if, as an owner of a running store, he may have ulterior motives. the poor guy is injured now, with a torn soleus incurred at broad street last week. he was leading at mile 7 when he felt in his right calf the flick that presages a hobbling seizure. he soldiered for a hundred yards and then told the lead motorcycle he was pulling out. the marshall looked at him like he was nuts, then radioed in. "the leader is pulling out... the LEADER just pulled out.... that's right.... do i look like i know??"

M retreated to the sidelines and became a spectator. he is a much bigger man than me: i would have stormed off -- as stormily as possible with a torn calf muscle -- and drowned in my own sulky sorrows.

on saturday i raced a 5K just to see if, after last week's deathmarch tri where i ran 7:23 miles and felt like poo, i could still feel good running. the race was 10min from my bed, on a course i like (over the ribber and through the woods), for a good cause. finally, the main sponsor is a local brewery which offers a fine post-race repast, with free GOOD beer (pig iron porter, mmmm. fuck celiac, man).

when i did this race last year, i went head-to-head with the steeple-chaser's fiance and set a 33-sec PR, breaking 19min for the first time in a 5K. this year, i finished 10sec slower, but i still won, and i felt GOOD. i felt so good at 2miles that i got goosebumps. M was right about the shoes.

when i hit the 3-mile mark i was ready to be done, though. i'd been chasing a 14-year-old kid for a half-mile and the little fucker would not let me pass him. he beat me by 3sec.

for a cooldown, i circled round and ran backwards on the course, watching the stream of humanity finishing. people of all shapes, ages and expectations careened, shuffled and drooped toward the finish line. kids at the finish line hollered and shook signs: "Dad you ROCK" and "go mom! we are puling [sic] for you!" some were ecstatic to finish in under 30 minutes; some were ecstatic just to finish. some walked. some walked with headphones singing to themselves. a group of college kids set up such a din when their friend approached the line that you'd have thought she'd just won the new york marathon instead of running a community 5k in 36 minutes.

"i won a gift certificate to iron hill," i told my mom afterward, "but if i'd done the 5K down in wilmington, i could have walked away with $100 cash." "it sounds like you got a lot more out of your race than a hundred bucks," my mom rejoined. that's why she is the mom. she's wise.

sunspots

so this morning i'm into work early -- feeling self-important and puffed with self-pity because i worked overtime yesterday and lost a couple hours of sleep last night worrying about a website -- and in my inbox is a note from the boss announcing that M will be out for 2 weeks because she's donating a kidney to her sister.

..........skids.............

now i'm really REALLY glad that i didn't forget mother's day because at least i'm not a TOTAL asshole.

advice from carlos

hey now, all you sinners
turn your lights on
turn your lights on.

MyCo can't decide on much right now. are we staying, or are we moving? are we re-branding, or sticking with the same old identity? should we hire more full-time staff, or continue to overload the current batch?

while we languish in indecision on many fronts, we have introduced some changes. there's a tiled floor in the elevator, for one, and we've also cajoled some contractors into the building even though our interviewing process is a day of hell. you're stuck in front of the whiteboard while our CEO alternately berates, indoctrinates and subjugates you; and when he's done, you're cast to the partners, who tenderise you for another couple hours. finally, you're subjected to a battery of tests which evaluate your technical skills and design savvy, and assess your familiarity with ancient roman philosophers, the reproductive habits of dwarf hamsters and dealing with floaters left in the toilet.

if you pass with flying colors, and if you're not stark raving mad by then, we'll ask you to return the next morning to work a 12-hour day. and please bring your own computer cos we're short. if you have a desk, bring that too.

one poor soul who ran the gauntlet came to us from a temp agency. he was a JAVA programmer brought in to help us with the back-end programming for an online quote application. he seemed competent enough, though a little quiet, as i outlined the project requirements. he asked few questions and set to work around 9:30. an hour later, he approached my boss to excuse himself. he needed to go out to the parking lot; he thought he'd left his headlights on.

he left, and never came back.

we worried for a bit, fearing he'd fallen victim to one of the homeless guys who piss behind our cars or the crackheads that hit you up for a buck or two. a call to the temp agency relieved our anxiety: dude just didn't like it here and lit out as soon as he could.

which reminds me ... i think i left my headlights on.

had a great swim practise this morning, so i'm not quite ready to sell all my shit like this guy. yesterday was a little touch & go, though.

balance

first tri of the season yesterday.
2-hour death march.
wanted top 3; finished 6th.

the silver lining:
a new appreciation for my real job, which does not involve swimming in squalid water, riding into a constant, inexorable headwind and running in slow motion.

i could never be a professional athlete.

19 babies

we have wood ducks -- or will!! the prolific pair has so far withstood a barky overactive dog, trespassing fishermen and me stomping through the woods ... the proof being a clutch of 19 -- yes, NINETEEN -- eggs in the box closest to the pond.

poor momma. just the thought of squeezing out 19 eggs makes me want to take a nap.

will we see the babies? doubtful, for if my sources are correct, wood ducks fledge in a day. to these ducklings, fledging entails clambering out of the box and dropping most ignominiously to the ground -- for they can't fly -- and making a beeline for the nearest body of water.

i see great potential for trauma at the hands of good ole red in tooth and claw Mother En. a couple years ago i presided over the nesting, egg-laying and proud parenthood of a pair of bluebirds. before the fledglings left the nest, however, they were discovered and devoured by the resident rat snake, which literally climbed the birdhouse pole and squeezed enough of his fat body into the house to reach the nest.

i can just imagine my poor ducklings (for they're mine, now) falling like tiny brown, panicked skyjumpers to an uncertain fate below. this is why i'm arguing for immediate dispatching of all 3 cats. at the very VERY least they should be safely confined for the next couple weeks. i think the dryer's the safest place.

first race report of 2006

this weekend i ran a trail half-marathon, part of a race called the triple crown, because if you’re manly enough, you can run the half, follow it with a 10K and finish off the morning with a 5K. if you’re a decent runner, which presumably you would be if you were to attempt something this foolhardy, you get 10-30min rest between races. that’s enough to hit the loo, weep in the car for a while and choke down a couple gels.

i’m not manly, so i stick with the half, with the other mortals. to my credit, i usually blunder off trail and tack on an extra mile or two for an extra challenge. what’s pathetic is that these trails are my home, and i still get blown off course.

we line up on a sunny, chilly saturday morning: perfect running conditions. next to me is a dude wearing gore-tex trail runners with gaiters. i’m guessing he read course fords White Clay Creek at miles 3 and 10 to mean two skips over dry streambeds consisting of detritus and scree that will get in your shoes. your gaiters ain’t gonna do shit, boy. and for all its claims of breathability, gore-tex can’t magically osmose a cup of water out of your soppy socks. n00b. he’s sure to beat me by at last a quarter hour, i calculate.

the whistle blows and we scamper across the meadow, avoiding gopher holes so conscientiously flagged by johnmac. i love trail running because every ramble through the woods is a couple minutes of childhood returned to you. men who work 70 hours a week at MBNA dash downhill pell-mell, their arms and spirits akimbo; i try to follow their lines, praying that I don’t crash into a tangle of privet.

we drop through the woods straight down to the creek, whereupon my cranky hamstring seizes and threatens to snap like a guitar string. i consider the possibility of pooching my entire season through sheer obstinacy… and i obstinately forge onward. i just went really easy.

i delicately pick my way on descents, cos descending is what truly hammers your hamstrings, and just to be safe i walk up hills or do the Ultra Shuffle. this is less a race than an exercise in pain management, and it’s a testament to my overall fitness level that i still end up the female winner. the steeplechaser’s wife is second, and she’s no slouch … then again, she proved her manliness by soldiering on through the rest of the triple crown.

F, the afghani metrosexual, offers a big hug at the line, despite the fact i’m covered in sweat, dirt and … blood? um, yes, blood. caught up in the heat of racing, i’ve neglected to notice the worst case of chub rub i’ve ever had: my inner thighs are chafed to the point of bleeding, and being on anti-coagulants means I bleed until the cows are just about home. when I cross the line it looks as though i’ve given birth in the woods.

in the car, i weep for a bit and assess the damage. you know how marshmallows puff up and soften when you toast them? up high, my inner thighs are just like that, except that instead of a toasty brown crust, there’s oozy red shit issuing from striations in my flesh. i staunch the bleeding with a layer of Body Glide, then do a lap of the 5K XC course with F, who does not seem too taken aback by my bleeding partses. he’s heard my belches and has no illusions about me being a lady.

i won’t be able to walk right for a while: instead, i gingerly manage a duck-footed waddle, like i’ve got a full diaper. as i walked into the grocery store yesterday afternoon, i saw a retarded kid reflected in the window, then realized that kid was wearing my tee and my skirt (i cannot bear anything with seams).

but i won, and that’s what’s important, right?

as the crow flies

yesterday afternoon i was hanging laundry outside when i heard a strange noise: a sort of melodic choking but without the feline raspiness that announces one of the cats' special deliveries. plus, it seemed to issue from the sky, where the cats usually aren't.

scanning overhead, i saw a redtail hawk performing graceful yet evasive manuevers while a pair of crows mobbed it, crying and diving.

from his stand in the garden, D noticed them too. "there must be a nest nearby," he said.

i watched the three birds pitch and circle across the sky, marvelling at the courage of two crows taking on a much bigger adversary a couple significant steps up the food chain; then i questioned the wisdom of leaving a nest unguarded for as long as they had. at this moment, one the crows tilted away and flew swiftly back -- presumably -- to the nest.

i love it when things make sense.

chimes

another crappy swim this morning, following a crappy run yesterday. suddenly, i inhabit another person's body, with alien form and rhythm. no i'm not retaining water fuck you very much.

such instability may be addressed with more caffeine. i make the first pot of ass coffee, double-packet strong, cos if you're gonna drink ass, it might as well be bracing ass. this time i man the machine to insure i do not brew a pot all over the counter, as i'm wont to do on friday mornings. i beep, whistle & hum like R2-D2.

kel's disembodied voice drifts up to me.

-- finn, what are you humming?
we rewinds, reflects.
-- umm, the doorbell?
-- that's what i thought. are you okay?
-- depends. did you bring me rum balls?

i like our doorbell. it's chimey and shit, just like mcgraw tower; and it's seductively hummable.

e defended his thesis yesterday. he may be sober enough to ride this afternoon.

Q & A

-- do you love me?
-- no. why?
-- i just wanted to ask a question you could answer.

help! BCN recommendations??

now that i've found barcelona on a map, i need to find a place to sleep one night in early june.

can anyone recommend accommodations in the city center? i'm looking for something that's friendly to single travellers who speak enough spanish to ask if your mom's in the bathroom.

cheap & utilitarian is ideal.

many thanks.

so very out-classed

the nemesis was top amateur woman at powerman north carolina this weekend. she ran the first 8K at 5:48/mile pace and then followed with the fastest bike time, almost a minute faster than than pro woman who won. i, OTOH, spent the weekend on the couch with another horribly addictive diana gabaldon novel. if i tried to run a sub-29min 8K, i'd puke and die.

yesterday my swim coach had us do a timed 500yd. i was 15sec slower than a month ago.

last night at the track we did sets of 800m and 1200m intervals @ 5K pace. i felt like crap and talked fisch into talking me into cutting the set short. this, after a recovery week.

"you can't swim, run and ride PRs every day," says the afghan metrosexual.
"why?" say i. "what's the point of training, then?"

it'd be best if senility comes earlier rather than later, because if this is any indication, i will not go with gentility into that good night.

your tongue's potential

Scientists Probe the Use of the Tongue
In their quest to create the super warrior of the future, some military researchers aren't focusing on organs like muscles or hearts. They're looking at tongues.

By routing signals from helmet-mounted cameras, sonar and other equipment through the tongue to the brain, they hope to give elite soldiers superhuman senses similar to owls, snakes and fish. more...

i gotta think this is something like touching a 9V battery to your tongue and sensing a mouse tucked in the grass 100yds away.

thank god for the military. without its nefarious collective mind, our tongues' potential might well be squandered.

geographically challenged

like any american, my grasp on geography is pathetic. this weekend, i found barcelona on a map for the first time, and i learned that newfoundland is an island: discoveries borne only from the necessity of finding my way to those destinations this summer.

since 40% of americans don't have a passport and therefore don't travel abroad, when -- in the course of their circumscribed lives -- are they ever gonna learn world geography? school? hah! geography, along with recess, art and sports, got left behind so no child would.

just back from spain herself, A reported she didn't hear much english, even in the larger cities. and barcelona, she noted, is imbued with catalan and its funky X's. i fiddled with my GPS navigator so it now directs me in spanish. i know where "bajo" and "izquierda" is, but catalan may sink me.

perhaps i'll just stay home and drink sangria on the porch.

wanted: pet psychologist

D returned and the cats are back in the house. yesterday morning at 6am i awoke to the unmistakable sound of a cat getting sick under the bed. this activity roused the other two. while one used the bedspring as her scratching post, the other squawked from the door.

when the cat under the bed began heaving again, i lunged over the side to roust her, hoping to drive her away from the carpet onto the hardwood floor. she froze, of course, and delivered her pile right in front of me, while the other two began the growling standoff that usually culminates in a hair-raising screech-fest. nasty things.

the dog's not normal, either. now he's eschewing his doggie bed, sleeping instead atop my running shoes. dogs like stinky things i know, but does this look comfortable? i've no interest in budging him, though: as long as he's there, the cats won't be throwing up in my shoes.

the dog whisperer comes to lancaster in may. i've got a puzzle for him.

better than the farting preacher...

"it's not about competition, it's about cooperation."
stupid bitch.

and here's one of the more flamboyant runners from the trail race last weekend. note the egg he's carrying in his right hand. it's raw, and for keeping it intact throughout 15K of rocky, rutty, hilly terrain, this intrepid soul won 8lbs of godiva chocolate. i drooled when he received his reward and vowed next year to enter the egg lottery.

practising assertion

forgot to set the pot in the coffee machine and brewed a lake of coffee across the counter. it's going to be one of Those Days.

am feeling v manly, however, for last night i kicked two would-be fisherman off the property. i'd just come back from a run and was contemplating getting nekked and hopping in the pond for a cooldown when i heard a crashing in the bamboo. muffled curses. more crashing, then two guys popped out, readjusting their hats. i cocked my head.

-- hello, um, do you know this is private property?
they both did a passable job of looking surprised.
-- no. really? is it yours?
no need to get technical and explain i'm just a caretaker, right?
-- yes. and there's really nothing here anyway. the pond's really shallow --
here a fish makes an audible plop behind me -- and we've got wood ducks nesting in that box.
i gesture to a pristine-looking box. of course the male duck that's been perching there all week is
in absentia.

to their credit, the dudes do NOT challenge my authority, despite the fact i'm standing there in my skimpy running togs, dripping with sweat and feeling like the biggest liar-head on the planet. they listen politely as i direct them to the park's pond across the street and then vanish into the bamboo as i march back up to the house with my chest puffed out.

i hope they don't come back and toilet-paper the house.

MyCo's state of the union

my company's just completed a 6-mo branding initiative. here are the results thus far.

what we DO have

  • new lighting fix-chures in the stairwell
  • a new security system outside. we have been Badged.
  • a 4x4 area of new tile in the entryway
  • a tiled floor in the elevator
what we DON'T have
  • a new name
  • a new logo
  • a new Identity
  • an updated website
we also don't have an HVAC system that works. when it gets hot in the afternoon, we have to turn the AC off or else it'll freeze up.

at 3 o'clock, when we've all got sweat dripping down our crevasses, i like to think well, at least our elevator floor looks nice.

the litterbox plot

yesterday D left for the rockies, where he's co-leading a treehugger trip. when he led this trip a year ago, he saved the group's skin by performing mad evasive maneuvers when a sleepy elderly dude sailed his car into oncoming traffic. the exec director received effusive letters of praise on D's behalf when the group returned home safely. wonder what herculean task he'll perform this year.

meanwhile, i am a bachelorette. pajama party all the time! just me and the dog. the fucking cats will not set foot in the house while i'm in charge. they can do all their fighting and scratching and puking and other retard activities OUTSIDE. i have a song to commemorate these occasions. it's sung to the tune of Camptown Races, and it goes like this:

Outdoor Kitties, sing this song
doo dah, doo dah
Outdoor Kitties all day long
dum didahdoo da day.

no doubt one or more of 'em will express their displeasure by hoarking on the hood of my car, but it's worth it.

the only spot of disquiet i have is the litterbox. D's suspicions will be raised if he returns to a clean litterbox, and he will not believe me if i said i cleaned it, cos i've never done so in my life. thoughts? will a couple sticky tootsie rolls suffice? should i take a dump in there? could be fun...

1st win of 2006

got some hardware this weekend -- and won my first race of the year!

honestly, all's i wanted was to have Sum Fun after last weekend's sufferfest, and a 15K trail race seemed just the thang. if i placed in my AG and/or beat my time from a couple years ago, i'd be happy, i thought.

i lined up mid-pack with tastymatt and then spent the next 4 miles passing a steady stream of runners. i had a grand time, picking up a margarita (er, "sports drink") at the Special Needs station @ 7-ish miles. fueled by the sports drink's electrolytes, i passed the 2nd place chick with a mile to go, and 1st maybe a half-mile from the finish. won by a mere 14 seconds, and if i say i didn't piss myself with sheer delight i'd be lying.

here's to serendipity.

and here's some footage of the easter bunny.

QUALIFIED

back from West Va late last night -- said goodbye to D's grandma and put her in the ground -- with her glasses on, which seemed odd.

am pretty wiped out from the weekend and am so glad it's a short week. i'm not particularly catholic, but i'll don the guise of a devoted christian to take off good friday. that's easier to swing than rosh hoshana anyway.

finally, unless USA Triathlon gives me the ix-nay, i'm going to worlds. thanks to my nemesis kerri receiving a 2min penalty, i won my AG on saturday and qualified for short-course worlds ... and got comped into nats. which're in 3 weeks.

holy shit.

to race, or not to race

i gave my bike an hour or so of luv last night, digging out winter's gunk and washing off a shitload of worm parts on the seat tube. she hasn't been this spanky in years, which provides me with a great excuse to NOT race in tomorrow's predicted torrential washes w/20mph winds.

the countless hours of life i've frittered away on YouTube and google video weren't applefrittered in vain. here's a dude doing an acapella, layered version of Closer.

neil gaiman drives a mini

ugh. still trying to catch up on the sleep i lost over the weekend. but i'm FINALLY healthy again and done with the antibiotics that made me dizzy and forgetful (ALWAYS blame the drugs). i'm hardly prepared for saturday's race, however: haven't yet put on the aero bars, and my re-rimmed zipps are tucked away in some corner, still w/o tubes or tires. i probably will not qualify for worlds, i may be spanked unmercifully and/or i may just not race, period.

i did, however, have a gratifying track workout last night. queen T was not in attendance, so i ran on my own, knocking out 15 quarters @ 5K pace w/100m recovery. if nothing else, my pacing is solid; with only a couple exceptions, i ran straight 1:30s, and i felt grand. not too hard; not too easy.

saul williams' black stacey has been kicking around in my head for days. so damn catchy. big props to TR for putting him on the bill, and to saul for playing to a bunch of white kids in black t-shirts.

oh, and tambourines are hawt.

march left like a lion -- there's a blizzard of snow outside. it's awesome. joolieboolie says she loves spring: "there's magic around every corner." well fuck that. i prefer cold and snow, hibernation and death. temporary death.

speaking of joolieboolie, here are some things you might not know about neil gaiman.

happiness independent of age

so, i'm flying out of philly to vegas tonight, to hook up with some woman i've never met, to carpool to cabazon, to see the show, then drive back to vegas, to see the show, then fly home sunday.

life is short. there may be an SUV with your name on its sidepanel; who knows how close it is.

ask fellows.

MS Orifice 2007

in this preview of the the Office update, we humble users (read: Teh PWNed) are introduced to the updated UI, which is all about results-oriented functionality. honky toolbars and menus have been replaced by The Ribbon, which is supposed to show you in real-time what effects select options will wreak upon your doc.

i wonder if it will show me how all my bullets will disappear when i bold this one word on page 37?

i do like the idea of results-oriented, on-the-fly chit, and it seems to run right alongside this age of rapid prototyping. but i like the idea of open office even more.

me and mike

MP
michael phelps and i both graduated from the same high school.
we both have long, ape-like arms and rather large, runcible paddles for feet.
we both like pancakes and we love our mothers.

there the similarities end.

i have not been arrested for DUI.
he is not a girl.
he does the most lovely butterfly, length after length, lap after lap; i am content with a length.

this is to say that this morning my fly timing finally clicked. my thumbs skimmed, my chin tucked at just the right moment and i drove with my hips, not legs. i felt myself propelled over the water's surface, finally *getting* the undulation. it was almost effortless.

for a length.

life is good.

another weekend of chicken soup

0 for 2 on the weekend. the idea of swimming a 500 with lungs still teeming w/Yellow Chunk was too ugly to contemplate seriously, and racing a 5K brick on saturday was a pipe dream anyway; so i devolved into my 7-year old self and spent my weekend in bed with diana gabaldon's Outlander. total chick-dom, and i couldn't put it down.

the copy i read was the library's, the 1991 first edition -- subsequent editions and sequels have veered away from the original romance-y covers -- and it sported thick, substantial pages with edges worn soft by involuntary fingers. such a transport: if i couldn't be myself this weekend, it was just as good being someone else, esp someone getting drilled to ecclesiastic heights every chapter.

p'raps now it's safe(r) to go to scotland, since a pubs & restaurants smoking ban went into effect yesterday. can the sick man of europe claw his way back to health?

future plans

i want to do so many things. i want to race tomorrow, and race sunday, and fly to vegas next week then drive to cali, then come back and qualify for short-course du worlds the 2nd week of april.

is this too much to ask?? especially as i'm recovering from bronchitis and a sinus infection?

the psych sheet for sunday's meet is out; merely glancing at it sends me into instant NervousPoops. i'm doing the 500, 200 and 100 free, plus 100 and 50 backstroke. seed times indicate i may be able to beat a couple 70- and 80-year olds, but that's on paper. who knows what those geezers can pull out on sunday.

if i can do a backstroke start without doing a complete backward somersault and end up facing the official, i'll consider my first swim meet a success.

FWIW, the C's and i bought our plane tix for spain yesterday. i will, at least, do that. i should be healthy by end of may.

excretions manual and automatic

Chunky Yellow-Chartreuse Mucous is still the norm, but i am fighting valiantly now that i have antibodies... antioxidants... WTF do i mean... ANTIBIOTICS on my side. i am sick of being Sick.

this, and twenty's snot rocket tale remind me of my halycon college days when, in the oakenshield's dining hall, muck, tuddybear and gintz made me laugh so i hard i threw up my dinner. this wasn't a snarf or snorgle; it was the full 9 yards: the cod, the potatoes, the salad -- all pooling on the tray in front of me.

to my then-boyfriend's eternal credit, he did not run screaming from the table; nor did he pitch my skanky ass. instead, he spread a dispenser's worth of napkins on top of the mess and we sent it down the conveyer belt to the dishwashers...

to you erstwhile work-study dishwashing folk in the oakenshield's kitchen, i do apologise.

reminder

sick. again. my goal today is to eat enough citrus fruit and Halls Defense drops that i'm pissing pure vitamin C.

no plans for st. paddy's day: i'd rather put a bullet in my head than drink right now. the last time i really put the liver to the test was our company christmas party (of course) in orlando (florida sucks, except for the oranges) in february (because christmas-in-feb makes perfect sense to us).

the party took place in our hotel, which gave everyone license to get purely shit-faced. ppl got voluble, saliva sprayed, fights broke out and general mayhem ensued. the only only ppl who kept their wits about them were the folks with cameras -- which is why i can peer above my right monitor and see tacked on the wall a pic of me, in my little black dress, holding something that looks like a tequila sunrise (erk) and giving my boss a big ole smackeroo on the cheek. above my stalwart employer's head someone has scribbled pimpin' ain't easy.

infamy.

get thee gone, Yellow Phlegm!

ken bruen contributes an Eats column to this week's City Paper, rocketing it up ten-zillion notches in my estimation. nowhere to be found in galway, bruen pops up in philly. silly oirish.

addendum:
re: drinking, above: NEVERMIND.

catch-22

T-dog's job search continues:

[IL]: so. i went on a bartending interview yesterday
[DE]: uh-oh....
[IL]: and the guy thought he was eminem -- and he told me that all that mattered when hiring was that the girl could speak the language and that she looked good.
[IL]: that was what the interview was.
[IL]: he looked at me asked me how to pronounce my name -- made sure i could speak the language and that was the end of it.
[IL]: what the??$#$@#
[DE]: ha
[DE]: so did you get the job?
[DE]: seems easy enough
[IL]: i don't know. they said they'd call me back.
[IL]: so if they call me back i'm going to feel like a piece of meat. and if they don't call me back i'm going to feel ugly.
[IL]: bastards :-)
[DE]: lol

things must be tough in chicago.

late client meeting yesterday had me dashing from work straight to the track. at each red light i went through another stage of undress/re-dress, a process momentarily halted when i found myself stopped behind a car with a bumper sticker that read I Love Squirrels. WTF?? why? they're evil, and i could write a tome about their nefarious nature but at the moment i have this at hand:
Route 116: Squirrel caushes crash.

convinced?

NIN @ HOB, 3-11-06

how good was the NIN show sat nite? so good i didn't feel the floor shaking. ant noticed it, from his vantage point on the soundboard rail, and so did those in the balcony, but it didn't register on me, so much flotsamjetsam in the crush 4 rows back.

the setlist was *sick*. House of Blues was too small to accommodate trent's happy curtain, so we were spared the whole screaming, bloodthirsty monkeys bit and got Mr. Self-Destruct, Reptile ("a sweet love song") and Sin instead.

sadly, aaron did not fly. he banged his noggin, or a snapped guitar string grazed his forehead (stories vary), and he was in sad shape, leaving the stage for good at the beginning of that old chesnut, Head Like a Hole. he was probably right chuffed. trent gets hit by a lighter during Hurt and ends the show right there; aaron cracks his skull, or's bleeding down his arm, and the show must go on.

best live renditions EVah of The Day the World Went Away, and Reptile -- even Starfuckers didn't suck, largely cos trent dropped out the middle part and josh freese's drums sped up so fast that trent & aaron could barely keep up. wicked. i guess jeordie was there cos ppl were talking about how he kept staring at the flasher chicks in the balcony, but i didn't notice.

the pit was fine (IF you're 5' 9", 160lbs and substantial) -- lots of to'g and fro'g, and once i went down with a couple others, but we were quickly yanked back on our feet. no real assholes, and i didn't get groped during Closer; and once again i give props to security, who put their necks -- literally -- on the line to pull people from the floor. and they're proactive about it, too: one guy reached out to a girl standing two rows ahead of me, just standing there with her head down; he reached out and gently pushed her forehead up, eyebrows raised to ask her if she were okay. he cocked a thumb back toward the stage: you want out? an imperceptible nod later, he reached under her arms, she stretched around his neck, and he plucked her from the mass of black shirts and over the rail in one smooth movement.

the strobe lights ending HLAH (and the show) triggered a blonde chick into an epileptic fit: the crowd passed her up and into the hands of the guys in the blue shirts. so perhaps NIN shows can restore a bit of faith in humanity, as well as proving you can pull yourself out of the hole of whatever addictive, self-destructive shit is consuming you.

i think it's safe to say that trent reznor is one of the few people who can bang a tambourine and not look like a total gaywad.

finally, saul williams is pre' smokin'. somewhat unintelligible at times, he's most effective when he's just riffing though i don't know how he remembers all those words without any music behind 'em.

eds and adam were too fucked up after the show and went straight back to the Flagship; ant and i had malteds at johnny rockets and then took the slowest People Mover in the world into the belly of Bally's and Claridge. total n00b gamblers, it took us forever to figure out how to play a slot machine, but i walked away with total net profit of $7. we scrutinised the eyes of poker players, watched the faces of blackjack dealers as the house lost a hand to a jubilant victor, and conjured stories about the roulette players with their lucky shirts and eye tics.

i left, though; i didn't stay. i wanted to be alone, and collected, and so i drove back home at 3:30, marvelling at the inexplicable traffic on the atlantic city expressway. i took a long shower to wash other peoples' sweat off me-- my leather belt was soaked through, as were my jeans & tee (red, a challenge to those 18-year old goths in their prosiac black).

i did NOT race the CR half-marathon five hours later. it was raining.

comfort food fix

yesterday was a shitty day. the highlight was my morning swim, and it was all downhill from there. shitty client meeting, shitty drive home, shitty ride, shitty run... well you get the idea.

by 6:30, i was wasted from the day. i'd bonked on my ride (underdressed + undercarbed) and i'd bricked only cos i'd promised jack a run. i really just felt like climbing into bed after i showered, but with D single-handedly painting the dining room, this seemed selfish, so i made dinner instead.

on the menu: Old-Fashioned Farm Fry, a recipe from me mum. what's Old-Fashioned Farm Fry? it's simple:

  • potatoes, chunked & boiled
  • bacon
  • onions, fried in the bacon grease from above
  • a couple eggs, cracked over what you get when you combine the above
  • as much grated cheese as you want, stirred in.

it is yummy, and it HIT THE SPOT. i followed it up with a brownie & haagen-dazs cos we had a timed 500 on the swim docket this morning. i slept like a wee fat bairn.

only after i read Fat Mammy Cat's posting re: Comfort Food this morning did i realise that i'd pulled the old comfort food trick last night. and it worked, on many levels. i am kinder and gentler this morning, not quite so shitty, and i swam a sub-7 500 this morning.

and i just ate the sloppiest PB & J for lunch...

awesome woot today. who writes these things??

every sperm is sacred

atwoodsouth dakota gov Mike Rounds explains why yesterday he signed a bill banning most abortions in the state: "In the history of the world, the true test of a civilization is how well people treat the most vulnerable and most helpless in their society."

those at abu ghraib? neither vulnerable nor helpless. same for those on those on death row because, you see, capital punishment is in effect in south dakota.

best strategy is to just stay in the womb, boys. it's ugly out here.

this morning A and i did timed sprints off the blocks to seed for the villanova meet on the 26th. since my breaststroke kick's still illegal and my fly timing's still off, i'm left with free and backstroke. not so bad.

while waiting for coach to fix the pace clock, F told me he's doing the st. andrews tri in june, and he asked me what he should wear, since this is his first tri. approx 2min later i had to leave the pool, but i came back considerable lighter and more buoyant; hence the times below. just *talk* of a race 3mos away is enough to trigger NervousPoops.

50 free: 33.6
50 back: 39.5
100 free: 1:13.2
100 back: 1:26.7

we'll do a timed 500 on thurs (excuse to eat shitload of ice cream wed nite).

pisces

FINA masters swimming worlds are at stanford this august. some seed standards (p25) for my AG:
5o fr: 36.5
100 fr: 1:20
200 fr: 2:53
400 fr: 6:00
50 back: 43.5
100 back: 1:36
50 fly: 40

what's crazy is that i could do this. i'd be last, but i could do it.

after a weekend of doing absolutely nothing, and being cranky as fuck about it, i finally got off my ass and swam this morning. there's nothing like Sick to make you feel old, frail and frumpy, and a spell in the water helped. i feel less frumpy, and my snot's less yellow.

speaking of frumpy, eddie van halen's seen better days. yoikes.

tourette's? blame M$

at least once a week i erupt into tourette's fury, throwing scandalous curses willy-nilly, like steve carell getting his chest waxed in 40 Year Old Virgin. my boss is always sympathetic. he knows where i'm at. "working in Word again?" he asks. you betcha. if it's Word, it's a turd. write letters and shit, yo.

so i am delighted by this What If:
microsoft ipod packaging parody

and i'm reminded of something i overheard on a group ride in days of yore, when puddincat and i were still racing:

puddincat: we've got a new teammate.
guy with huge quads: *grunt*
puddincat: his name is tim.
guy with huge quads: *grunt*
puddincat: he's got tourette's.
guy with huge quads: what the fuck is tourette's.
i miss puddin.

fisch was absolutely right about rhythm returning after a month of speedwork: last night's 800s were sublime. descended from 3:18 to 2:55 and left the Queen-to-the-T behind for the last 3.

stella's got her groove back, bitches. and her ass is SORE. (for real.)
